I was not sure what the fuss was about but finally broke down and invested in a small set of Gelatos. I actually first purchases the Children's version from Faber-Castell which appear to be identical to the Gelatos which are targeted towards adults. (the main difference is the price - the children's set is much less expensive). I loved the children's set so much that I purchased this tropical set to add some more colors to my collection.
Gelatos are unlike any other medium I have used. I am a hobbyist, not a professional artist, but the Gelatos could be used by either. Gelatos can be used as a crayon or as a watercolor and have some similarities to an oil pastel crayon yet are still inherently different. The colors are vibrant, even when diluted.
I have used as a water color on stamped images or vintage prints but have also used just the crayon to color embellishments made from kraft paper or to add a bit of intense color to pieces that I am working on. These are truly versatile and can be used in countless ways. A lot of people seem to enjoy using these in mixed media artwork or art journaling.
I find that it helps to play around with the Gelatos and see which techniques come naturally to me and which ones need to be perfected with a bit of practice. There are some great tutorials on YouTube.
I am just getting started with Gelatos. I cannot say I was thoroughly happy with the product because the videos I have seen make this product appear to be more creamy and able to move around with your finger or a dabber, or even a baby wipe. I did not find this to be exactly true with these particular Gelatos. They were quite chalky in texture and I was somewhat disappointed. I am keeping them though as I need to learn what I may be doing wrong. Perhaps it is me and not the product. I will keep trying.
not at all what I expected, kinda like glorified crayons. I doubt I'll buy again. I know some people love these art sticks. Perhaps I just need more practice with them.
I am in LOVE with Gelatos! They are so smooth and creamy, they remind me of lipstick. I've used them dry, just like a crayon with wonderful results. My fav is to use them with water. The dreamy looks you can achieve are nummy. If you like water soluble products, and haven't tried these, you're missing out.
I LOVE Gelatos and These didn't let me down. Exactly what I expected and they are really fun to do Art Journaling and creating different color sprays using misters. Not to mention the help make backgrounds so easily! the brush is good for blending, and the little dotter thing makes great dots. (at first I thought it was a blending pad.. it's not lol.
I love these for filling in around stenciling in my art journal. The colors are vibrant and I love the affect. I have a lot of these in different colors. I just color them like crayons and use a wet brush to blend and spread the color. I don't like to waste them by shaving them like some do on youtube. I use my acrylic paints and mix with water to create my sprays. These are too expensive in my opinion and are better used for applying directly onto your page for maximum use. They are well worth the money for art journaling and other art projects.
Love these Faber-Castell Gelatos. The colours are beatiful with a silky-like texture. I've found them perfect for use on many different surfaces including canvas and through stencils , plus they can be used with water for a painted-type finish. Because they are acid-free they are safe to use on my scrapbook pages. Love this new medium :)
the packet is quite big but the crayons are quite small. having said that, the colours are so intense a little goes a long way which is very good. The dabber is also a useful tool but unfortunately from the picture I was expecting a white crayon which there isn't. I have now used all the colours and am impressed. i will be back for more colors soon.
