Vietnam Art Scene

This article is written by Gloria Malouf-Marsh.

This artwork is a rock formation on a large backdrop at a tourist sight in Hanoi, Vietnam, when we were touring in May.  The initial composition was quite different to my own interpretation.  This work has been a challenge for me. The background mountain colors were all blending together.  The tree gave a focus of stability, grounding, and the base of the tree reminded me of the individual standing on a strong fortress of confidence and self-esteem in life.

I kept to the colors of quinacridone magenta, white and cerulean blue and worked on making different shades of lighter and darker contrasts, but chose to work with the pastels shades – pale pink, darker pink, pale mauve, pale blue etc, which created a very peaceful end result. I also worked with texture building paste, as this is one of my first attempts, and I’m starting to be more confident with it.

The two pagodas portrayed a history that is in keeping with the culture and religion in Vietnam.  The pagodas represents places of worship and religious significance that’s prevalent in common in Nepal, India, China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Burma and other parts of Asian culture. We discovered many pagodas; each one portrayed a history of religious and cultural significance. I used texture paste to create depth and perspective.  The pagodas were raised up high on hilltops that gave them a sense of ageless time overlooking this peaceful and tranquil haven.

In Taoist philosophy the study of animals were significant and their movements and each animal depicted symbolic meaning.  As for geese in Traditional Chinese Medicine, geese are sacred, very inspiring and resourceful; cranes have balance and graceful movements, etc. Practically speaking, a swan is a heavenly version of the humble goose. I cut geese pictures and used collage in this medium and painted over them, with the three colors I chose from the beginning.

This painting took me deep into my imagination, I was totally absorbed and it took me back to the beauty, the history and the very interesting places I visited. This is my second time back and I developed an appreciation of the culture and the people very much.

I’m putting more time and effort in my days creating and painting and I’m discovering so many aspects about myself I was not aware of – patience, discipline and talent.  I always maintain it’s not the destination that counts but the journey getting there that is the recipe to a very happy and fulfilling life.

Keeping creating!

My name is Gloria Malouf-Marsh. I live in Brisbane, Australia, with my husband Greg and my daughter Salwa . Among my many interests are singing, playing the piano, cooking, doing voluntary work and I have a passion for studying Ayurveda and Taoism, both ancient Indian and Chinese philosophies.  I also am a Yoga Chi Gung Teacher. Springtime is glorious in Brisbane. I rise early and go for brisk walks, do my yoga practice and I’m inspired to face the day with inspiration and confidence. I get creative ideas for painting when I’m in nature. I love listening to nature’s sounds and watching and hearing the birds.

I am developing discipline in creating and making time for myself to daily paint. I seem curious to want to further my techniques.  I’m working with the building texture  mediums. It gives my imagination space, open up to new attitudes and I lose myself in this amazing healing world – new opportunities open up and we go from strength to strength. A sense of confidence and enjoyment has developed with me regarding honing my skills and techniques in the art medium, and I do enjoy this website so much.  Hearing peoples’ ideas and seeing their talents, just simply amaze me.  It is a special global family.   I hope to be taking up some extra art classes as I feel this will broaden my scope of techniques.  I find classes are a very good positive influence for me.  If I can create, so can you! Enjoy!

Red Poppies

This article is written by Gloria Malour-Marsh

I love bright colours, so this is why I chose to paint a field full of blooms with brilliant red poppies as the focus point, and a back drop of cobalt blue. Firstly, I found covering the canvas with cobalt blue enabled this vibrant color to shine through on a maximum level and gave a very contrasting effect.

Red Poppies symbolise renewal and life, blossoming, loyalty, beauty, and courage.

They also signify a promise of resurrection after death.  It also has many medicinal qualities.

The red poppy is an annual herbaceous plant with a straight stem, covered with big hairs.  The red poppy flowers are single with 2 big sepals and 4 big bright red petals.

I painted the whole canvas with cobalt blue. The composition started with finger painting.  I used my thumb, the index finger and the middle finger, to create a raised effect with each petal of the poppy.  You’ll begin to notice the texture is building layers. Something that was very foreign to me.  It took some practice to be confident. As I would finger paint, I’d manipulate my fingers with a twist to form one petal of the poppy, and yet maintained a confident hand.   The finger twist created a raised texture, and this is something new I learned in mixed media.  I needed to build layers and this developed the texture. This gave a vibrancy to the composition and an easy manner of manoeuvring began with my fingers.

The colour red kept me thinking of human life, of blood and of hearts beating.  A feeling of fascination set in for me as I started to apply this new found technique.  I added tiny flower centers and they were done with the head of a cotton bud, and I chose white and yellow. I was still somewhat apprehensive as to the outcome.

But I have learned so much with mixed media, that this form of art is very forgiving and one can make mistakes and rectify them immediately. I still have so much more to learn in this art medium. As I sit and paint, I’m transported to another time in space. At this point, I feel the art medium is a form of meditation. The mind becomes very absorbed in what you are doing and a sense of stillness settles inside. We are learning newfound techniques and are applying them to our lives. Philosophically speaking, we take one step at a time, make mistakes, learn from them, and we develop confidence with the brush and with life. We look on life with a very positive and happy attitude. We take one step forward and two steps backwards, and any mistake is a stepping stone forward and a good teacher.  This is the time to hang in there.

This started me with overcoming the risk factor of making mistakes with the brush and my confidence took a leap. I started to like what came from my imagination. This brought alive one’s freedom and abandon without conforming to structure and build on our childish sense of imagination and fun. This truly frees up one’s rigidity and encourages our creative unique style to flow.  Positive self regard builds one’s self esteem and we start building on our own identity. A sense of trust settles in and we start powering on with the brush with confidence.

I worked hard to maintain a free flowing consistency with my fingers. I know that practice, practice and more practice are the recipe to unleashing the artist within.

Enjoy!

About the author:

My name is Gloria Malouf-Marsh. I live in Brisbane, Australia, in a suburb called Indooroopilly. I live with my husband Greg and my daughter Salwa.

I have been on a personal journey for over 20 years. I am a very analytical person. I am a Yoga Chi Gung Teacher.  I have been teaching for nearly 5 years. I now have taken up voluntary work in that field. I have been studying Ayurveda and Taoism, and apply the knowledge and benefits to my life.  It’s a life long journey. I enjoy the rhythms of  nature and ground myself when I walk. Among the interests I enjoy are singing, chanting, history and the study of different faiths. I also take time out to meditate, to be mindful and understand the power of the breath. I’m involved in voluntary work in the capacity of newsletter editing and I have a penchant for the love of cooking.

In the last four years, I have taken up drawing, water colour painting, collage, iconography and acrylic medium, which I love so much.  My artwork takes me on a journey with my title.  It could take me 3 months to finish a painting or 6 weeks, depending on what’s going on in my life.  I sometimes have dry patches, and I know that is for a reason.

I’m itching to pick up the brush and discover new horizons in the techniques of mixed media. The best teacher is practice, practice and more practice. I’m trying to organise a special place for my art work. I feel this will give me momentum and more encouragement to continue my journey in this creative medium.

Mixed Media Artist – Gloria Malouf-Marsh

We are coming to an end of this Mixed Media Artist series and today we have Gloria Malouf-Marsh sharing her gorgeous painting and collage. Over the last 5 months, our Mixed Media Art community has shared work from all around the world. Each artist has had different interests, reasons why they create and a wide range of skills.

Gloria has given us such a vibrant tale about herself and her art, so I’ll let her tell us in her own words.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I live in Indorpoopilly, Brisbane, Australia,  with my husband, daughter and our beagle Cassie.  My daughter is finishing her law degree this year.  Cassie is a wonderful friend of mine.  We do lots together. We enjoy our walks in the sun.  I’m a Yoga Chi Gung Teacher.  I study Taoism and Ayurveda.  I work with the rhythms of nature.  I love singing and I enjoy doing the things that I’m passionate about.

I feel whatever I choose to paint always tells me a story.  I love working with vibrant colours, and colour mixes is wonderful, and symbolism is an important factor  when I paint – connecting objects to certain things of interest and presenting it with the brush. I go on a journey with my title.

The adventure – I’m also influenced by my dreams, times in my life. Cultures have influenced my life enormously. I allow the mind and the brush to paint with flow and abandon. This  allows the juices to flow.  My journey becomes exciting. This develops a passion in me I really want to pursue.  The enthusiasm it creates gives my brush a prod of confidence. This becomes my private journey.  As my flow opens new discoveries occur and I surprise myself. Acrylic painting is very forgiving. Whether you are an amateur (like myself) or a have many years of experience, it  awakens you to the dance of life.

The health benefits are enormous.  This is when I started after surgery – 5 years ago. And I continue to do so.

I work with mixed mediums.  I started with water colours. I now enjoy  acrylic and collage.
